AbilityMap CEO and co-founder Mike Erlin has published a feature article with the Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML ANZ) on why Australia’s productivity problem isn’t a skills gap. It’s a capability alignment gap.
The argument is direct. Organisations have more skilled people, better tools, and wider access to learning than at any point in history. Productivity growth hasn’t kept pace. Mike’s explanation: we’ve got good at identifying what people can do, but we’re still poor at understanding whether they’ll actually apply those skills under the conditions a role demands.
Skills tell you what someone knows. Capability tells you whether that knowledge will show up when things get complex, ambiguous, or pressured. Two people with the same qualifications and the same job title can deliver very different results. The difference isn’t training. It’s the behavioural capability underneath it.
The article makes the case that this distinction becomes more urgent as AI enters the picture. AI amplifies what’s already there. Strong judgement gets sharper. Weak judgement produces confident mistakes faster. Without a clear view of where capability sits in the workforce, leaders can’t predict where AI investment will pay off and where it will create risk.
Mike challenges leaders to stop treating skills and capability as interchangeable, to measure capability before performance problems show up, and to think about productivity as an alignment challenge rather than an efficiency one.
